SOUTH MALE ATOLL

Kandooma Thila ***

Definitely number one in the ranking of the best dive sites in South Male atoll. Long thila, located in the middle of the channel, offers spectacular conditions to observe grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, eagle rays, big schools of jacks and snappers both with incoming and outgoing current. North side of the pinnacle is nicely covered with soft corals with the top of the reef being home to many reef fish and green turtles. Currents can be pretty strong so negative entry and fast descent is often required. Current hooks should be ready to use.

NORTH ARI ATOLL

Maaya Thila **

The thila (a pinnacle) is about 80 meters wide in diameter and is considered one of the best night dives in the Maldives. Top reef at 5 meters makes it easy to access even with strong currents. The upcurrent side is always very active and busy with fusiliers and snappers. Big jack fish, whitetip reef sharks, stingrays and moray eels can be spotted easily. Some overhangs around the thila provide shelter for turtles. Even though it has a reputation for a night dive it is also quite popular during the day. A few separated coral blocks south of the thila create a tunnel and are full of beautiful coral bushes. With the right current this is a place to spot grey reef sharks as well.

SOUTH ARI ATOLL

Moofushi Kandu (Manta Point) **

Drift dive with a chance to spot manta rays hovering over the cleaning station at the depth of around 14 to 25 meters. If mantas are spotted it is recommended to use current hooks and stay around the cleaning station for a longer time. The dive site is quite popular during the northeast monsoon and sometimes might be overcrowded with divers. Whitetip reef sharks are common visitors around the deeper part of the cleaning station with blue striped snappers and fusiliers being permanent residents.

VAAVU ATOLL

Miyaru Kandu ***

One of the channel dives that you don’t want to miss. With strong incoming current the list of possible encounters is impressive. Mainly grey reef sharks but also whitetip reef sharks, eagle rays, napoleons and tunas are quite common and with the visibility reaching 40 meters during the northeast monsoon it can be the highlight of the trip. Outgoing current offer worse visibility but the sharks are still there. The site is not  recommended for beginners, negative entry is often required and current hook is a must to avoid causing unnecessary damage to the reef. Most of the time you will spend at the depth of 26 to 30 meters so checking air and no-deco time more often is strongly recommended.

MEEMU ATOLL

Muli Corner **

The reef is known as home to a lot of sharks during incoming currents but it also welcomes manta rays on a large cleaning station during outgoing current. Entering the water with empty BCD and not wasting time on the surface is often recommended, specially with strong currents.

SÜD-MALE-ATOLL

Kandooma Thila ***

Eindeutig die Nummer eins in der Rangliste der besten Tauchplätze im Süd-Male-Atoll. Long Thila, in der Mitte des Kanals gelegen, bietet spektakuläre Bedingungen zur Beobachtung von Grauen Riffhaien, Weißspitzenriffhaien, Adlerrochen, großen Schulen von Stachelmakrelen und Schnappern, sowohl bei einlaufender als auch bei auslaufender Strömung. Die Nordseite des Pinnacles ist schön mit Weichkorallen bewachsen und die Spitze des Riffs beherbergt viele Rifffische und grüne Schildkröten. Die Strömung kann ziemlich stark sein, so dass ein negativer Einstieg und ein schneller Abstieg oft erforderlich sind. Strömungshaken sollten bereitliegen.

VAAVU ATOLL

Miyaru Kandu ***

Einer der Kanaltauchgänge, die Sie nicht verpassen sollten. Bei starker einlaufender Strömung ist die Liste der möglichen Begegnungen beeindruckend. Vor allem Graue Riffhaie, aber auch Weißspitzen-Riffhaie, Adlerrochen, Napoleons und Thunfische sind keine Seltenheit und mit Sichtweiten von bis zu 40 Metern während des Nordost-Monsuns kann dies der Höhepunkt der Reise sein. Bei abnehmender Strömung ist die Sicht schlechter, aber die Haie sind immer noch da. Der Tauchplatz ist für Anfänger nicht zu empfehlen, da oft ein negativer Einstieg erforderlich ist und man unbedingt einen Strömungshaken benutzen sollte, um das Riff nicht unnötig zu beschädigen. Die meiste Zeit wird man sich in einer Tiefe von 26 bis 30 Metern aufhalten, daher ist es ratsam, öfters nach Luft zu schauen und die Tauchzeit zu verkürzen.

Muli Ecke **

Das Riff ist dafür bekannt, dass es bei einlaufender Strömung viele Haie beherbergt, bei ablaufender Strömung aber auch Mantas in einer großen Putzerstation. Es wird oft empfohlen, mit leerer BCD ins Wasser zu gehen und keine Zeit an der Oberfläche zu verschwenden, besonders bei starker Strömung.

THAA ATOLL

Walhai-Punkt *

Es gibt keinen bestimmten Ort, an dem das Tauchen eine Begegnung mit einem Walhai garantieren würde, aber es ist gängige Praxis, abends ein starkes Licht an der hinteren Plattform des Bootes zu verwenden, um Zooplankton anzulocken, das wiederum Walhaie anzieht. Vom Tauchen mit dem Hai am Heck des Bootes ist eher abzuraten, da die Luftblasen die Planktonmasse zerstreuen könnten. Am besten schnappt man sich eine Maske und Flossen und taucht vorsichtig an der Seite des Bootes ins Wasser ein, um den Walhai nicht zu verscheuchen, und genießt dann die Aussicht beim Schnorcheln. Manchmal bleibt der Walhai stundenlang, auch mehr als ein Besucher ist möglich. Die Anweisungen der Tauchführer müssen befolgt werden, und alle Schnorchler müssen sich an einen Verhaltenskodex halten, um den Moment in vollen Zügen genießen zu können.

Tiger Zoo

Vor der Hafeneinfahrt der isolierten Insel Fuvahmulah tauchen wir mit einer lokalen Tauchbasis den Tiger Zoo. Manchmal kommen 15 oder mehr verschiedene Tigerhaie vom Drop Off herauf.

Süd-Plateau Fuvahmulah

Abhängig von der Strömung ist dieser Tauchgang im Blau manchmal eine Herausforderung. Von Tigerhaien, Hammerhaien, Walhaien usw. kann alles vorkommen.

Tiger Zoo

In front of the harbour entry of the isolated island Fuvahmulah we dive with a local dive centre the Tiger Zoo. Sometimes 15 or more different Tiger sharks come up from the drop off.

It´s sometimes a challenging dive in the blue depending on the currents. Everything can happen from Tiger sharks, Hammerheads, Whale sharks etc.
