The Ultimate Bali–Bajo Expedition Eastbound is an extraordinary liveaboard journey from Bali to Labuan Bajo, crossing some of Indonesia’s most diverse and exciting diving regions aboard La Galigo.

Our adventure begins in Bali before heading towards Nusa Penida, where dramatic underwater landscapes and nutrient-rich currents create ideal conditions for encounters with some of Indonesia’s most iconic marine life. Around celebrated sites such as Crystal Bay, Manta Point and Toyapakeh, divers may encounter manta rays, turtles, schooling fish and, during the right season, the elusive mola mola.

From Nusa Penida, we continue east towards Southwest Lombok, exploring quieter reefs away from the busier diving areas. Coral gardens, sloping reefs and rich marine life provide a beautiful contrast to the stronger currents encountered elsewhere on the expedition.

The journey continues towards the Gili Islands, where clear tropical waters and vibrant reefs are home to turtles, schooling fish and reef sharks. Sites around Gili Trawangan offer another change of scenery as we make our way deeper into the Indonesian archipelago.

Further east, we reach Moyo Island, where colourful reefs and a lush island landscape create a more relaxed chapter of the journey. Above the water, there may also be an opportunity to explore the island and visit its secluded waterfall.

One of the expedition’s standout wildlife experiences awaits in Saleh Bay, where we hope to swim alongside whale sharks around traditional fishing platforms known locally as bagans. These gentle giants are regularly encountered in the area, although, as with all wildlife experiences, sightings can never be guaranteed.

We then continue towards Satonda Island, a volcanic island surrounded by reefs and home to a remarkable crater lake. Diving here offers another distinctive environment before the expedition moves on to the dramatic volcanic landscape of Sangeang Api.

Sangeang delivers one of the route’s most unusual underwater experiences. Black-sand slopes, colourful coral, fascinating macro life and volcanic bubbles rising directly through the seabed create a dive environment unlike anywhere else on the journey.

The final part of the expedition brings us into the legendary waters of Komodo National Park. Here, current-swept pinnacles, manta areas and thriving coral reefs create some of Indonesia’s most exhilarating diving. Depending on conditions, we may explore celebrated sites such as Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, The Cauldron, Batu Bolong, Karang Makassar, Mawan and Sebayur.

Komodo also brings the adventure above water, with the opportunity to experience its dramatic landscapes and search for the legendary Komodo dragon in its natural habitat.

After days of diving through manta territory, whale shark waters, volcanic reefs and remote islands, La Galigo completes her eastbound crossing in Labuan Bajo.

The Ultimate Bali-Bajo Expedition Westbound is a journey for divers who want to experience more than a single destination. Starting in Labuan Bajo and finishing in Bali, this expedition takes you west through some of Indonesia’s most exciting and remote waters aboard La Galigo.

Our adventure begins around the legendary waters of Komodo National Park, where nutrient-rich currents support an extraordinary variety of marine life. Expect colourful coral reefs, schooling fish, turtles, reef sharks and the possibility of unforgettable encounters with manta rays. Above the water, the dramatic islands of Komodo create one of the most distinctive landscapes in Indonesia.

From Komodo, we continue west towards Sumbawa, exploring less-travelled dive sites along the way. Volcanic landscapes meet thriving reefs, offering a completely different diving experience from one day to the next. One of the highlights of this expedition is the opportunity to encounter whale sharks around Saleh Bay, an experience that has become one of the most memorable parts of this route.

The journey continues through remote islands and volcanic waters, including areas around Sangeang and Moyo, where underwater scenery ranges from colourful reefs and walls to unusual volcanic environments. Between dives, enjoy island landscapes, quiet anchorages and the feeling of travelling through parts of Indonesia that few visitors experience.

Eventually, we make our way towards Bali, completing an extraordinary crossing from Labuan Bajo through the Indonesian archipelago.

This is more than a Komodo diving trip. It combines world-class diving, big marine-life encounters, remote exploration and life aboard a traditional Indonesian phinisi into one extended adventure.
